this point; once the weathering is complete you will have to
remove it again.
When weathering a model I like to use water-based paints
for dry-brushing, I used Polly Scale paints for this model but,
as they are no longer produced, you will have to use another
brand of paint such as ModelFlex or Testors Model Master
Acryl. To get the patchy dirty look on the walkways and top of
the short hood, dry-brush a bit of roof brown followed by a
medium gray on both areas.
For overall grime and dirt, I like to use washes of Testors Model
Master enamel paint applied with an airbrush. I find the sol-
vent-based paint has finer particles than water-based paint;

when applied with an internal-mix airbrush, it gives a nice ef-
fect. Mix up three washes of paint. The first is two parts Flat
Black, one part Gunship Gray, and 24 parts thinner. This wash
gives a nice exhaust color and should be sprayed on the roof,
particularly ahead of and behind the exhaust stack. Next mix
up a wash of one part Dark Skin Tone Base to eight parts thin-
ner; this is a nice dirt color and should be sprayed on the pilots,
steps, trucks, and fuel tanks. Finally mix up a wash of one part
Sand to eight parts thinner; this is a light gray-beige color and
should be sprayed around the trucks.
Seal the weathering with another clear coat. In this case I used
Testors Dullcote thinned with lacquer thinner and applied with
an airbrush. I tried not to get any Dullcote on the sides of the
hood and cab, so they would keep the bit of gloss from the pre-
vious clear coat and the locomotive would still look like it had
been recently painted.

sight glass ...
Install lengths of A-Line chain across the openings in the front
and rear handrails. Dry-brush the chain with the same blue
paint as used on the rest of the model. Use a bit of Microscale
Krystal Klear to make the window in the water sight glass on
the right side of the long hood.
Install the cab windows from the Cannon & Company cab kit.
Brush-paint the right side window frames silver and the left
side window frames blue before installing. Drill two #80 holes
ahead of the left side cab window, install a Details West 357
wind deflector and brush-paint it blue. Paint the Detail Associ-
