Reports can often tell you why a build fails, or why a particu-
lar car isn’t moving.
If all else fails, the JMRI user group on Yahoo is very active, and
its members are more than willing to help you find the source
of the problem. The program developers monitor the list and
contribute regularly. The URL for the group is:
I monitor that group as well, so if you have a problem, feel free
to post a question there. If you can’t find a solution to your
problems, contact me via email at:
and I will work with you to find a solution.
Dennis Drury first became interested in trains
at the age of 2. And later, his love of trains led
him to go to work for the Southern Pacific in
the signal and engineering departments. He
also spent some time in Colombia building a
1:1 railroad from the ground up.
Dennis' previous layout, featured in the
article, was dismantled when he moved to
Reno last year. He is currently building an
HO scale layout based on the Southern Pacific line from Klamath
Falls to Chemult as it was in 1984. It will include trains from the
Burlington Northern, Oregon California and Eastern as well as the
Klamath Northern railroads.
Dennis is working towards NMRA Master Model Railroader and
currently has three of the seven
certificates required.

Wrapping up
Types and styles of operating systems are quite varied, ranging
from the simple to the very complex. Some people love using
computers to assist them in doing some of the drudge work in
setting up an operations system while others avoid them at all
costs. I doubt that a single perfect system will please everyone.
The JMRI operations program works for me and I hope this
article will encourage you to give it a try. While the program is
offered free of charge, if you find yourself using it on a regular
basis, please consider making a donation to the JMRI Project.
You can find the details for doing that here:
