structures. John estimates that there are over 200 buildings on
the layout, in addition to all of the supporting detail. Modeling
an urban scene requires a lot of buildings, and John has either
built or used pieces of nearly all of the urban structures avail-
able for industries, as well as buildings used in supporting
roles. A number of the structures are scratchbuilt, using a wide
variety of materials. Anyone familiar with downtown Cincinnati
will quickly recognize many of the industrial buildings that were
around in the mid-1970s. John has built replicas of these using
photographs from that time period.
Operation
For John, the ultimate reward for all of his efforts is seeing the
layout in operation. It takes between 12 and 15 people to fill
