TRAIN FACTS
Today 40% of world’s freight cargo is transported via trains, and
that number continues to grow each year.
Total area of contact between train wheels and the railhead is
about the size of a silver dollar.
The longest continuous route for one train is between Moscow
and Vladivostok on Trans-Siberian Express railway line: 9,297
kilometers (5,777 miles) long!
The longest stretch of perfectly straight railway track is in Aus-
tralia: 297 miles (478 km) long.
Current speed record for trains is held by the French TGV bullet
train: achieved 584 kph (363 mph) and then braked for 16 kilo-
meters (10 miles) to stop.
The first commercial steam train (Stephenson’s “Rocket”) man-
aged to reach the speed of 60 mph (97 kph) in 1830.
