I usually have a range of 14’ - 16’ as a minimum height. Older
wood structures would have the lower 14’ height, with more
modern structures at 16’. If I plan to run locomotives under the
load-out I have an 18’ minimum height. 50-ton / 70-ton cov-
ered hoppers need 14’ of minimum clearance, while 100-ton
covered hoppers need 16’ minimum.
As far as side-to-side clearance under the structure, I allow
16’ - 18’. If I am planning two tracks under a load-out, I use 18’
track centers with the side-to-side distance at 18’. The next
consideration is the total height of the load-out structure. This
measurement is determined by the conveyor to load chute
