any modelers have experienced DCC-controlled locos
sputtering off and resetting over dirty track, and DC
loco stalls necessitating five-finger encouragement.
Some modelers have resorted to the use of “super cap” keep-
alive supplemental circuits which can power the decoder and
loco for a few seconds, but some keep-alive implementations do
not meet clearance requirements on HO layouts.

KAOS comes to model
railroading ...
HO scale
What if a loco carried its own power on board? It would enter
the realm of battery-powered model railroading. This article
is an exploration of battery power for HO scale modeling,
from relatively simple to more complex applications. Different
approaches are presented with successful results and prob-
lems encountered along the way.
Battery-powered scale models exhaust all their power.
Constantly replacing them can be both expensive and prone
to damage in small scales. One then considers rechargeable
