Yes, it’s a model - 1
1: It’s early morning as the last of the empties are pulled
down Van Buren Street after a long night of switching.
A
brakeman guards the intersection as GN 24872 rolls by. Such
scenes were common in the ‘50s and early ‘60s as many of the
steam era veterans were still in revenue service.
The model was built and photographed by Don Smith. Don spe-
cializes in weathering O scale freight cars and engines. More of
his work can be seen at

2: BNSF 555 still in its Santa Fe paint, is waiting to leave the
BNSF Pasco, WA yard.
Kevin Packard took this photo on his 3'
x3' yard diorama of his modified Atlas 8-40BW. Kevin followed
photos of the prototype to detail and weather the model. The
model retains its factory paint, but has been renumbered and
patched. Weathering involved numerous steps of airbrushing,
washes, and dry-brushing, with acrylics, oils and powders.
The diorama track is Micro Engineering track that’s been
detailed and weathered. Kevin used a mixture of Arizona Rock
and Mineral, Woodland Scenics static grass, Silfor tufts and natu-
ral materials for the scenery. We think Kevin did an outstanding
job of capturing the feel of modern railroading. You can see the
model operating at
