applied to K&LE equipment from 1968 onward. During this
period, the K&LE secured a route westward from Monongah,
WV through Cincinnati, OH, and on to St. Louis, MO.
In 1976, Conrail was formed and the K&LE again found itself
looking for a big brother. The Pittsburgh & Lake Erie Railroad
had elected not to join Conrail, and the K&LE quickly merged
with this railroad and the Monongahela in order to protect its
traffic base against the far reaching Conrail.
The layout is set in 1976 and equipment from all of the roads
serving Cincinnati at that time can be seen on the railroad, in

8. The American Tool works is the first of many industries that
make up the Eggleston Avenue district, and is based upon an
actual building in downtown Cincinnati.

9. Power from the Newport Steel ore train, which has come in
from Cleveland, is being serviced at the engine facility at the
west end of Undercliff Yard. The K&LE picked up several C430s
from Conrail at the time of the merger.

Layout design
The layout occupies almost the entire basement of John’s sub-
urban Cincinnati home and measures approximately 48’ x 36’.
To support operations, there is a small dispatcher’s desk and a
crew lounge. The layout design is point-to-point, with multi-
track staging yards representing areas east and west of the
modeled portion of the railroad.
