weathering. The grime has
been added simulating the
typical road dust on the ends
of cars.

As on the boxcar
sides, I paint the dark
rust patterns so typi-
cal on prototype box-
car roofs exposed to
the elements. I use
the same colors used
to create the rust pits
and scratches on the
sides of the boxcar
– burnt sienna and
black acrylic. When
all of the rust pat-
terns between the
weatherized seams
have been hand-
painted in multiple
coats , I applied a
mist of Dullcote. Next
I use the Graham
& Co. “Transparent
Orange Oxide” oil
paint to add the halo effect. This pretty much completes
the roof. Once in a while, I dry-brush a light layer of a
dark-gray pastel powder for a burnished rust look.
