cars began arriving in 1949 which made it likely that lightweight
protect cars were available to fill in when regular assigned equip-
ment was sent for maintenance or repair work.
Chair cars were placed into equipment pools operating out of San
Francisco and Oakland. The diagrams in the postwar period shown
here indicate a single set of car numbers as reported by observ-
ers. These serve to indicate the type of car usually on the train.
For researchers, railroad accident reports are considered the most
accurate source of car number information as insurance company
payments and records are involved.
