YES, IT’S A MODEL |

8. On a Thursday morning, south-central Alaska experienced a mag-
nitude 6.2 earthquake. Rail crews had a lot of work putting cars back
on the tracks. James Ogden took this photograph of his layout after
he returned home from work.
As he put it, “I ventured into my train room to see what the dam-
age was. The worst of it was a building which toppled onto some
boxcars, tipping them and a shipping container over. Other than
that, there were a few derailed cars and other things out of place,
but overall things turned out better than I had expected. The in-
teresting thing is that some cars derailed, but others did not. Some
rolled off spot, but others stayed in place. Some tools went to the
floor, but a pin vise that was on my workbench, balanced on its
end, is still there, balanced on end.”
Earthquakes have strange effects on models as well as the prototype.
