GettingReal Column - 7
The informationon the right sideof the center column (10)
shows that the25, the2-6-0, remained inEl Portal during the
dayand tookTrainNo. 3back toMerced that evening (first
column to the right of the station list). However, engine23
ranas anextraback toMerced, departingat 9:45a.m. right
after arrival and receiving their trainorder. While I don’t have
a copyof that trainorder, I dohave thedispatcher’s journal
for theperiod July1939 toAugust 1940 including theentry
for this trainorder (11). Thedispatcherwrote the trainorder
inhis journal ashedictated it to the stationagent inEl Portal.
The stationagentwould then repeat it back to thedispatcher
who typicallyunderlinedeachwordas itwas readback tohim.
While some trainorders in the journal areunderlined (and
doubleunderlinedwhenaddressed to two stationagents), oth-
ers arenot.

9: It appears that the list of cars for theNo. 3, the
return passenger train leavingEl Portal at 7:00 p.m.,
waswritten down early, expecting it to generallymatch
themorning train. However, two of those on the list
were crossed out and all of the cars except the Totten
were left overnight inEl Portal as those tourmembers
spent the night inYosemiteNational Park.
