California. It occurred to me that I needed to recreate a scene
from my childhood, a string of wood-sided Pacific Fruit Express
reefers. Typical of those seen in California’s Central Valley in
the ‘50s, they were packed with fruit and vegetables for deliv-
ery to Chicago or St. Louis.
Lionel offered some finely detailed wood-sided PFE reefers,
offered both in a 3-pack (6-11657) and singly (6-27361) in their
2006 Vol. 2 catalog. I now have nine, making a nice consist on
my 10’ x 11.5’ spare bedroom layout.
But the reefers need ice, that is loaded through their roof
hatches. With layout space tight, I looked at my loading dock,
