Model Railroad Hobbyist | December 2016 | #82 GETTING REAL column Nick Muff Modeling the Kansas City Southern Railway| Mainline South – Grandview, Missouri After modeling 45 feet of downtown Kansas City it is a pleasant change to be modeling Grandview, Missouri, the first stop for the Southern Belle on its southbound journey. Grandview is approximately 20 miles from Kansas City Union Station. The population in 1950 was 1,556. With any of our model projects the first challenge is usually that of selective compression. I do not have room to model all of Grandview so the first step is to decide how to create the impres- sion of small-town America in a space 30” wide and 25” deep. The focal point of this scene will be the Kansas City Southern’s Grandview Depot. I had previously created the depot using a 1/16” laser-cut ply- wood sub shell with laser-cut 1/64” plywood windows, asbestos siding and asphalt shingle roofing.
