I gave into the prototype weathering bug a while back.
The key to making it look realistic is to follow photos. It really
makes the weathering much easier. I also use photos, lots of
photos, to get a good visual of how the prototype is weathered.
Then I follow the same patterns for weathering the structures
that I use on the layout. Then it becomes a mater of replicating
what I see. The weathered equipment really adds to the scene
as the train rumbles through it.
