The Layout Room
What makes a great space
for your layout
I
must confess it has been at least seven years since I had
an operating layout. That however is about to change. I
have spent the last few months designing and planning a
switching layout using space I have available along one side
of my garage.
Now I know that a garage is not the most desirable location
for a layout, but this is what I have available. The layout will
have to share space with the family auto as well as my wood-
working equipment. These requirements do not preclude me
from having a nice space for the layout. I have spent the past
several months upgrading the garage to make it comfortable
for both the layout and woodworking.
Having had the privilege of visiting and operating on numer-
ous layouts over the years, I took time to reflect on those
that I liked the most. What I realized was that these weren't
necessarily the most detailed or elaborate layouts; nor were
they the layouts that were finished or had great scenery. The
layouts that I remember best are the ones where the owner
had taken the time to prepare the room and it comple-
mented the layout.
